Percussion
The percussion family includes a number of instruments such as drum set, bells, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, xylophone, even tambourine! Percussion instruments are defined by the way they are played: they are struck to create a sound. Percussion instruments are an integral part of any music group as they act as the “beat keeper.” Students who want to master a wide variety of percussion instruments will find private in-home lessons are a great way to increase a student’s interest and skill. Teachers are encouraged to integrate in-home lesson materials with the school band curriculum.
What you need:
- Instrument of choice
- Drum sticks
- Metronome: A metronome keeps the beat for you while you’re learning. They help you learn how to count and keep music at the right pace throughout a song. Different versions are available for a variety of preferences and price ranges (optional).
Additional materials may be suggested by your teacher depending on the musical style and specific percussion instruments.

Percussion lessons are a fun and challenging way to learn a life-long skill. Music is something you can take with you anywhere you go! You can be any age and take percussion lessons. Young students should be able to count and recite their ABC’s without assistance. Most students start by taking half hour lessons and increase the lesson length when they are ready.
With Along Came Music all instrument lessons are completed in-home. Your teacher travels to you and conducts the lesson where you practice. This allows the teacher to not only correct each student on a technical level, but also to resolve any poor habits that may arise due to the practice environment. Percussion lessons can be conducted in a variety of styles.
