Doug

Doug Petty began studying piano at the age of eight.  His interest in a variety of musical instruments and styles eventually led to a degree in music from Carnegie Mellon University, and a Masters Degree in Composition from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with George Crumb and George Rochberg.  After completing his degree Doug worked for several years as a recording engineer for the Philadelphia Orchestra radio broadcasts.

In 1985 Doug completed a degree in Computer Science and was hired by IBM, where he was employed as a software engineer for 20 years.  He left IBM in 2005 to pursue a full time career in music and theatre.  While employed by IBM he sang with the Rochester Choral Arts Ensemble for eight years.  Since leaving IBM he’s been involved in projects at the Rochester Civic Theatre in a variety of capacities – performing, teaching, music directing, and creating original music.  He also performs in a variety of bands in southeast Minnesota and the Twin Cities, and his jazz band, Fair Trade, was twice featured at Thursdays on First in 2009.

Doug’s first music lessons as a child were taught at home.  As a teacher he understands the importance of establishing a rapport with students, defining clear objectives, and creating a comfortable learning environment.  Lessons are designed to provide a solid foundation in the elements of music, and are tailored to the meet the unique needs, interests, and learning style of each student.
